Rescue Parrots Are NOT Quick Fixes! | Parrot Behaviour & Training | TheParrotTeacher
Переглядів 466День тому
Hey parrot fans, This week's video looks at rescuing parrots and how it isn't always as quick and easy as some make out. Sometimes a rescue will settle in amazingly, other times (most often) it will take lots of hard work, bonding, training, setbacks and observation. Every parrot has it's own learning history and sadly many in the rescue system have very complex ones and have endured some less ...

When a cockatiel taps it's beak against something it has a very different meaning to when a macaw does so! So it's really useful to know what it means with your species and individual bird! Hello cockatiel lovers, This video is a cockatiel beak grinding to rain sounds video. I made it one hour so you can use it for conditioned calm and relaxing techniques. Many of the videos that claim to do it are just bird sounds which can sometimes have the...

    • @TheParrotTeacher

So it generally is better to keep them with another of their own species! Potentially it could, but if you manage hormones you can reduce the risk of problems! You could go for a same sex pair and if possible from the same clutch!

I’ve been a wildlife volunteer for over 5yrs so I’m good in the medical department when it comes to birds when it doubt I call my avian vet ;; I recently asked for behavioral help on a fb parrot group and got judged immediately;; didn’t ask to be judged just asked for help on my parrots sudden behavior as I’m having trouble finding a parrot trainer near me. I’ve had my parrot since last oct and Ive noticed most of the parrot community are toxic and occult like. No matter what you do with your parrot ITS WRONG. 🙄🙄

We have a male and we believe we have a female but the believed female is 4 months old. We have them separated and will not pair them for 2 years. If you are going to have birds of any kind or already have them i suggest that you get a generator or two just in case electric goes out due to storms.if they get too hot or cold they could possibly pass away. Use non ethanol gas if available with a fuel stabilizer. 25 feet away from your house. I highly recommend firman 3650 watt's and up dual fuel

I have turned one of my bedrooms into a jungle playroom for my 2 conures. I have 3 long wavy perches, 4 swings, and a ladder hanging from the ceiling along with a climbing net. They can basically walk around from all of the things I have hanging from the ceiling 3 quarters around the room. I have a long table with a water fountain and a play gym and a foraging box on it for them to play. I also have toys next to the perches and swings as well. I also added wall decals of trees and plants. I also have two T stands for them to access a well. One with bowls and one that stands alone. Have I overdone this ? They seem to have a blast flying around exploring all of the fun things to do. I just got them a ring toss toy, and I'm training them to put the rings on the little post it came with. When watching your video of what birds see, I started wondering how they see the decals on the wall. It truly looks like a jungle. Their cage is 61 inches tall and 29 1/2 inches deep and the same wide. It's basically a square cage. It's full of enrichment. But is it too much ? Can this be over stimulating for them ? I've tried to make it as natural as I can to replicate an outdoor environment. We have covered all of the trim with pvc pipes, so there is no trim to chew on. I'm really curious what your opinion is on the decals and if I made the room too busy. I love it...but it's what's best for the birds that come first. I've noticed that you keep your walls free from things, and this is why I'm asking. I plan on getting a Java tree for them, but they are expensive, and I'm saving for a large one. We have a bird show coming up here in Lawrenceville, GA, on July 27th and 28th. We want to pick out our own to make sure we get the right one for our birds that we like as well. It's a risk ordering one being that they are expensive and you never know what you'll get.

Where I live, a new bird has taken up in the near-by woods. It has a really loud piercing voice that reminds you of typical pet shop bird noise. I don't know what it is but it is seriously doing my head in because it is really loud and has a sharp sound. Also, it is frightening away the blackbirds. Its most distinctive sound is a sort of "chub chub chub chub" noise plus squeaks and nasal "cree cree cree". If anyone knows what this bird is and how I can get rid of it for my sanity, I'd be really grateful! I have seen it twice I think and it is about the size of a blackbird and dull colour. Thanks everyone.

It's thje loudest bird I have ever heard and it just goes on and on with its irritating squeeks and "chubbing". I wouldn't be surprised if someone bought it for a pet and then found out how loud and tedious it is and let it out the cage. Now it's driving my neighbourhood round the twist. I have to use earplugs now and I can still hear it. Dawn and dusk are the worse times. Will it last winter?

Question for you! We've got a young tame male cockatiel who's about 9 months old. In about a month we will be adopting two baby brother cockatiels from the same clutch. Would it be okay to keep the brothers in the same cage and our existing cockatiel in the other cage to start the bonding process? Also I imagine we need to take each brother separately and do the bonding exercises in the video with the existing bird? Any insights are appreciated!

Thank you so much for being honest about this. I just got a rescue pionus a couple months ago and even though he’s super “easy” in terms of rescue parrots without any major behavioral problems, we are still working every day on trust building. He still won’t take treats from my hand, which is making basic training, such as just stepping up, very challenging. I have zero regrets on adopting him and I’m patient and willing to work at his pace, but it’s not easy. I feel that certain groups almost bully people into adopting a parrot instead of buying one from a breeder and a lot of people just aren’t prepared to work through the issues and problems that can come along with an older rescue bird and sadly the bird is either left in its cage 24/7 and ignored or gets rehomed again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely pro-adoption, but I really believe that people should make an informed decision whether to adopt or buy from a breeder and consider what’s right for both them and the bird. Sometimes buying a baby is the right choice and I don’t think people should be made to feel bad if they’re honest in saying they’re not prepared to take on a rescue who needs more attention and knowledge than they have available. Every bird deserves the *right* home regardless of their origin and that begins with people behind honest with themselves about what they can take on.

I suggested they should simply purchase a parakeet and maybe a handfed cockateil and warned a bird like that should cost so much more, their might be an problem with him. They insisted and made the purchase. Turned out the bird was only 8 years old, however, screamed non-stop. I learned a child owned the bird for 4 years but go bored of it, a second owner apaprently kept it in a cellar with no lights to keep it quiet but didn't work. The third owner literally purchased this bird for $400 had it for a whole week then BEGGED me to take him FREE. I did take him with cage and was able to keep him calm and handle him fine but cetainly diddn't have room for a large bird. I found a suitable owner who was used to handling large birds ... years later bird is happy and living with a family whoo loves the bird to this day. (5 owners in 8 years is rediculous and very sad, this happenes when poeple do not do their research)

How old are conures when they have their first moult?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher 11 днів тому

It varies from bird to bird! Some can take ages to have theirs!

@TheParrotTeacher thank you, my 3 month old gcc has been losing lots of small feathers, she's doing a lot of preening and now has bald patches

So generally they shouldn’t have bald patches but it’s tough to tell. I’d observe her closely and see what happens and if any new feathers are growing in

@TheParrotTeacher thank you, I can't see skin, just the white feather underdown, the ones with colour are the ones missing, I've just posted a photo on purely parrots Facebook to see if anyone has had this happen

Catching up on some of your old videos. You and Sophie are my favorite because you given practical and straight forward advice. Ive watched dozens of different channels and Ive come back to your videos over and over. The important thing for me is we want to do the best we can to give our conure a happy and healthy life, but we arent professional bird trainers and we have normal lives with jobs, family, and other obligations. We truely feel like we won the lottery when we brought our bird home. He has given us so much joy and laughter and love. We really appreciate all the knowledge and advice you share, but also you don't create unrealistic expectations of perfect birds and perfect bird owners. Thanks!!

Thank you for the very kind comment! Those are the kinds of people I want to help as there isn’t enough good advice for them and many like yourself try so hard to do the best for their birds!!

Great advice. I rescued a cockatiel about 8 years ago. He had PTSD. He would freak out if he saw your hands. It was very difficult to change out his food and water bowls. He has come a long way since then. He will eat from our hands now. He will not let you hold him or anything like that. We take it one day at a time. He likes interacting with us so that is also a win.

My male cockatiel is also afraid of hands but our relationship has come very far over the 3 years I’ve had him. I think he may eventually trust me enough but we are taking it slow and he has started to trust me because he knows I am his buddy but he’s never been held by a human so it’s not something he’s comfortable with but he trusts me so I think he will eventually come around like The Parrot Teacher said.

@@videostar323 that is great progress. My guy came from an abuse family. I got him from a coworker. My bird Ricky belonged to his mother and see had to go into a nursing home. After that Ricky was being abused. My coworker was taking about how mean Ricky was and how much noise he made. They would shake his cage or hit his cage. When I heard this I said I would take him. We got him that same day. Ricky was under some much stress he was self harming himself by pulling out his claws. He only has 3 left. He is not the same bird. He is not afraid and knows he is safe. He even comes out of his cage and likes to interact with us.

My Conure is the same way with hands. I had to work a lot with him. I had a lot of bloody bites. I'm so glad I stuck with it, he's my best buddy now. He still doesn't let me rest my hand on his back for long, but I can do it for a few seconds. I can now give him scratches, and he will step up on my hands now and I can take my finger and put it to his break without him biting me.
